Redwood Forests Of Humboldt County

The Redwoods Forests of Humboldt County on Northern California coast contain the tallest living things on earth, and some of the oldest — the coastal redwood forests spawn the giant Sequoia Sempervirens and grow well over 300 feet, live between 400 and 800 years on the average and can live to 2,000 years. They once grew nearly everywhere in the northern hemisphere, but climate and topography changes have destroyed much of the Redwood forests; today Redwood forests can only be found in a remote area of China, along the Sierra mountains and here on the beautiful upper coast of California. The Redwood Forests of Humboldt County are truly something to behold that will make any trip to the area unforgettable.

All points of interest within and around the ancient Redwood forest are a leisurely drive away from The Friendly City, making Fortuna the perfect place to stay during your visit to the majestic redwoods forest and beyond…

What Makes a Sequoia Redwood Forest Special?

Every forest has it's charm and beauty but the redwood forest is infinitely more majestic because of the sheer size of the giant trees.  They tower over trees in other forests -- which makes the redwood forest dark, mysterious and quiet.  There is almost a cathedral stillness about the redwood forest.  Make no mistake -- it is filled with a wide variety of plants and animals.

Other plants that do well in the deep shade of the redwood forest are rhododendron, trillium's, ferns, and trees like tan oak and Douglas fir.  The redwood forest has giant trees that make a grown man look like a small ant -- and some of the ferns are larger than an adult!

And there are critters in the redwood forest, though you rarely hear them they are there.  The trained eye will see raccoons, skunks, elk, deer, squirrels, minks, weasels, an occasional fox and frequently, bears.

The redwood forest is ancient but amazingly the redwood trees grow more rapidly than most people think.  Often one redwood tree will grow 6 feet in a growing season because they use sunlight and fog so efficiently.  The redwood forest is found in a narrow strip of land along the Pacific coast.

All of the critters on earth are an important part of the redwood forest ecosystem -- even humans.  For that reason we invite all to come and see the redwood forest and please, leave it like you found it:  Quiet, serene, moist, cool and litter free.
