A 33-mile stretch of of two-lane highway that runs parallel to U.S. Highway 101, The Avenue of the Giants is an outstanding display of virgin redwood trees and numerous dedicated groves that you can bicycle, hike or see the redwoods by car. This scenic highway is a must see while visiting Fortuna. See Map

The Lost Coast Loop
From Fortuna: approx. 12 miles northwest on Highway 211 in Ferndale
Not far from Main Street, Ferndale, at the southwest end of town as you head out towards Centerville Beach, you will find the north end of Mattole Road. Here begins a beautiful tour of The Lost Coast — the narrow two-lane road winds up through forest and farmland to an elevation of 2,000 feet then winds down to sea level where it meets the ocean at Cape Mendocino. You'll enjoy coast and beautiful bluffs for a number of miles, then wind your way back inland towards giant redwood groves at Rockefeller Forest in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. A round trip from Fortuna is about 100 miles. A great way to see the remote coast and redwoods by car.
